Government funding for students joining universities and TVETs has been changed, introducing new terms and conditions to be met by family background before receiving them. The changes will see the government only supporting 29% of the students joining the higher education institution.
Speaking from the statehouse yesterday evening during a public address entitled "New Financing Model for Public Universities and TVETs," Ruto said that his government will now give 80% of its cash to help students coming from extremely poor families. The state will henceforth commence family background scrutiny to determine the amount of support required.
"In the new financial model, my government will give a full scholarship of up to 50% to students joining higher institutions but originating from extremely poor families. In addition, my government will also give them another opportunity to get 30% of the financial support from loans. This will culminate in 80% financial help as parents will only cater for 20% of the university and TVET fees," Ruto stated.
The new financial model will offer a major blow to most students since the government promised to cater to only 29% of them. In the 2022 KCSE results announced in December last year, more than 173k students got the minimum grade for joining universities, while another 145k students will be joining TVETs.
